About BaseLine Technology
History
- Cliff W Estes began his career as a junior draftsman for renowned
Northwest fishing vessel naval architect, Ben Jensen.
- After four years with Ben, he left to gain a broader experience base
in other types of commercial vessel design. He landed at the
venerable firm of Nickum & Spaulding Associates where he
designed tugs, barges and ferry boats and, yes, even a fishboat
or two.
- After a few years there, it was back to Ben Jensen's office for an
additional four years.
- Growing restless to get into the technology he knew was going to be
the future of vessel design, he joined the firm of Elliott Bay Design
Group, where he spent four years lofting commercials vessels of all
kinds, including small aluminum skiffs up to 300' barges and including
large and small fishing vessels and ferries.
- In 1992, he left permanent employ to venture out on his own.
Since then, he has made a living assisting other design firms and
shipyards in their engineering and lofting efforts. He has
lofted over 100 vessels in his career as well as measuring another 100
vessels with his theodolite total station. He has also worked
for several yacht designers and Delta Marine Industries of Seattle,
where he developed tooling for the superstructure of a 178-foot yacht,
currently (feb 2010) under construction.
- Several years ago, he was approached by Professional Boatbuilder
magazine about developing a course to teach new marine designers how
to use Rhino and another one to Teach AutoCAD. The Rhinoceros
course was a big success and continues to attract new designers month
after month
- An upshot of the Rhino course was the writing of several tutorials
on the use of Rhinoceros in marine design. These have been
widely received and are currently (Feb 2010) being upgraded to reflect
new methodologies. They will continue to develop as Rhino,
itself, does and will be made compatible with each new version of Rhino.
